What Is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a gentle, focused therapeutic approach that can help you access the part of your mind where patterns, beliefs, emotions, and automatic responses are deeply established. In a comfortable, relaxed state of focused attention, you remain aware and in control while therapeutic suggestions and techniques can help support meaningful change.
Hypnosis can be integrated with psychotherapy or used as a stand-alone wellness service, depending on your goals.
How Effective Is Hypnosis?
Research suggests that hypnosis can be an effective therapeutic tool for certain concerns, particularly when it is used as part of a broader treatment approach. Studies have found benefits in areas such as anxiety, stress, pain management, sleep difficulties, phobias, and behavior change. Hypnosis does not work identically for everyone, and results can vary depending on the individual, the concern being addressed, and willingness to participate in the process.
For many people, hypnosis can provide a way to access new perspectives, strengthen desired behaviors, reduce emotional distress, and practice responding differently to thoughts, feelings, and situations. It is not a magic cure, but rather a therapeutic tool that can complement other evidence-informed approaches.
The goal isn't simply to experience hypnosis—it's to use the experience to create meaningful, lasting change.
What Can Hypnosis Help With?

Hypnosis is not about giving up control. Instead, it involves developing focused attention and becoming more receptive to therapeutic suggestions that are consistent with your goals. Research has found hypnosis can be useful as an adjunct to psychotherapy and may support treatment for concerns such as anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, pain, and behavior change.
Hypnosis: Myths & Truths
Myth: "I'll be unconscious or asleep."
Truth: Most people remain aware throughout hypnosis. You can hear the therapist, think, respond, and communicate. Hypnosis is better understood as a state of focused attention and increased responsiveness to suggestion—not unconsciousness.
Myth: "I'll lose control."
Truth: You remain an active participant. Hypnosis does not mean handing control of your mind over to someone else. You can reject a suggestion, speak up, or end the experience.
Myth: "A hypnotist can make me do something against my will."
Truth: Hypnosis does not give another person control over your values or decisions. Therapeutic hypnosis works collaboratively, using suggestions that support the goals you have chosen for yourself.
Myth: "Only certain people can be hypnotized."
Truth: People vary in how readily they respond to hypnosis, but hypnosis is a skill and experience that many people can learn to engage with. There is no need to be unusually suggestible or gullible.
Myth: "Hypnosis is just entertainment."
Truth: Stage hypnosis and clinical hypnotherapy are very different. Clinical hypnosis is used therapeutically and can be incorporated into evidence-informed psychological treatment.
Myth: "Hypnosis will automatically fix everything."
Truth: Hypnosis is a therapeutic tool—not a magic cure. Your participation, motivation, and willingness to work toward change remain important. For some concerns, hypnosis may be most helpful when combined with other therapeutic approaches.
What Does a Hypnosis Session Feel Like?
Every person's experience is different. You may notice:
-
A deep sense of relaxation
-
A feeling of being absorbed or highly focused
-
Changes in your sense of time
-
Vivid imagery
-
Physical sensations
-
Memories or emotions coming to mind
-
A feeling of watching an experience rather than actively participating in it
-
Or simply feeling very relaxed while remaining completely aware
You do not have to "go deep" for hypnosis to be useful. The experience is individualized and collaborative.
Online Hypnosis Sessions
Hypnosis can be conducted virtually, allowing you to participate from the comfort and privacy of your own home.
For an online session, you'll want a quiet, comfortable space where you can relax without interruptions. You should be able to remain safely stationary throughout the session.

Therapeutic hypnosis sessions may address anxiety, phobias, stress, confidence, motivation, habits, performance anxiety, sleep, relaxation, limiting beliefs, and other personal-growth goals.
Past-Life Regression
For those who are interested in exploring the spiritual or experiential side of hypnosis, I also offer past-life regression sessions.
Past-life regression uses hypnosis and guided imagery to explore experiences that may emerge as memories, images, emotions, sensations, stories, or symbolic material. Some people approach regression from a spiritual perspective and understand these experiences as memories of previous lifetimes. Others view them as a way of exploring the unconscious mind, imagination, symbolism, or personally meaningful narratives.
There is no requirement to hold a particular belief about reincarnation to participate. The experience is yours to explore and interpret.
The Influence of Dr. Brian Weiss
My approach to past-life regression is influenced in part by the work of Dr. Brian Weiss, a psychiatrist and author best known for Many Lives, Many Masters.
Dr. Weiss became interested in past-life regression after a patient undergoing hypnosis began describing experiences that she interpreted as previous-life memories. His subsequent work led him to develop and teach approaches to regression therapy and to write extensively about its potential spiritual and therapeutic meaning.
Dr. Weiss's work is influential in the field of past-life regression, but claims about reincarnation and the objective accuracy of past-life memories remain matters of personal belief and are not established scientific facts. For this reason, past-life regression is offered as an experiential and exploratory practice, rather than as a method for proving that a past life occurred.
The goal is not to convince you of what an experience "means." Instead, we can explore what emerges and what meaning, insight, or perspective you may take from the experience.
Past-Life Regression
$350 | 2 hours
A longer, immersive session designed specifically for exploring past-life regression and the experiences, emotions, imagery, and insights that may arise.
Important Information About Payment
Hypnosis and past-life regression sessions are private-pay services. Insurance is not accepted for hypnosis or past-life regression sessions.
These services are separate from insurance-billed psychotherapy and are provided on a self-pay basis.

WHAT IS KB COUNSELING & EMDR?
Hi, I’m Kate Bullard, LPC, and I’m the founder of KB Counseling & EMDR, LLC.
I believe that people are far more than the problems they are experiencing. Sometimes anxiety, trauma, fear, depression, difficult life experiences, or patterns that have been around for years can make it difficult to see that for ourselves. My role is to create a safe, compassionate space where you can slow down, understand what is happening beneath the surface, and begin creating meaningful change.
My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, and individualized. There isn't one therapeutic approach that works for everyone, so I draw from a variety of evidence-informed modalities based on your needs and goals. My work includes EMDR, CBT, DBT, Brainspotting, mindfulness, meditation, and hypnotherapy, among other approaches.
